Paid directory submissions, are they a good thing or a bit of a waste of money. As you guys know I am very pro directory submissions generally but I have never paid for one as I don’t think they have been needed in fact. Directories are good for traffic and backlinks and awesome for local SEO, but there is not many opinions on the paid options out there are whether they are actually worth the money.
The reason I am writing this article is because I got a call from touch local about a listing I submitted. They wanted to confirm some information but mainly called to try and upsell me to a paid listing, and although I was half listening and half thinking “just go away” the guy made some good points that most people forget to mention when it comes to paid submissions.
Paid directory submissions and paid links are not the same thing!!
Paid links are mainly for the link juice, whereas paid submissions are for traffic as well as a backlink. To be honest its 99% worth the traffic as the backlink is not worth a lot but you can get some great traffic from businesses to business directories and that is the main thing that should be considered for paid directories.
So anyway he continues talking about this directory and then says a sentence that does actually spark my interest. Can’t remember the exact figures but it was something like: “We have a local seo business page and someone who has been a paying customer with us for 3 years now gets XXXX visitors from us. That’s around 300 a month.” For a local SEO company getting 300 visits a month is pretty good, especially as these are other business owners that are looking to get started with SEO most probably.
So anyway it usually doesn’t matter if the directory is PR10, because the listing you get will be on a PR0 page, as well as not even having an anchor text in most cases “visit website”. Which means the link itself is not worth the money. But for £100 per year, if you can get 1000+ visitors to your site in that year. Targeted visitors too who actually want an SEO company you stand to make a lot of money. Even at a very low 2% conversion that’s still 20 per year on an average of £150 p/m (1800 per year) = 360,000 extra per year, from a £100 investment. Not bad, not bad at all! And if the directory you are with doesn’t work you still only need 1 customer to be in profit!
Will be writing a report about how the investment went and whether I recommend this investment, depending on whether it has a good R.O.I. of not. Alright guys, thanks for reading and as always: “Stay Optimized”…..
