A few weeks ago I wrote an article on “is it possible to compete with the big dogs in SEO?”. Which ended up turning into a rant about whether domain authority is over valued or not. So I decided to take to the internet and get some opinions of some SEOs on DA and whether its BS or not.
Sidenote: Whether you call it Domain Authority, domain rank, trust flow, citation flow, power rank, page authority or whatever, my question to these individuals is:
“Do you think these metrics can ever be reliable? and Why?”
My opinion first up: I’m sitting on the fence and saying I simply don’t know (makes a first right…) But sometimes I believe these figures are accurate, other times they simply are way off. With the introduction of blocking htaccess and plugins that block all the major link checking bots, I think these figures can never be 100% reliable, but I’m just not sure.
The other opinions were as follows:
Those types of metrics are good for guidance but Iâd take them with a pinch of salt, not as gospel.
It varies – All metrics are created differently. So knowing how each tool set creates their metrics can give a guide…Should be used as prospecting if you are considering buying a number of domains/links
I think this is what it comes down too. But always I believe the best metric to be common sense.
For example: If the title contains a relatively long keyword or the domain name is a brand-able one, the site should always rank first for these keywords. This shows the site was originally designed well and has strong enough links to rank 1st without being penalised or over-optimised.
If the site has expired then the best software in my opinion is: a.) wayback and b.) link resource tools, picked up a free trial of this and its pretty awesome. The power-trust feature is the most accurate of the DA/DR/PA/TF/CF range as it pulls data from all of these sources. Although that does come at a price! $300+ per month for a decent subscription. So if budgets are tight the common sense, wayback and your Moz/Majestic or Ahrefs backlink checker of choice will be enough.
