Why are people now saying that directory submissions do not work? This has been around the SEO world now for at least a few months if not a couple of years and I guess this post could also go in the SEO Myths category as well so I will include it there too (that’s why the title is so funky!) Wherever the myth started it doesn’t matter, what does matter is that now thousands of people think that they should not post to directories and again this is not the case you just have to choose the ones you want to post to and mix up your links and anchors a bit.
If you are a UK business, I will use a client on mine but I want to keep their identity hidden so my client is going to be Jim who owns a website where he sells his own product, he might buy it in, make it who knows that’s none of my business. Anyway so Jim is looking to rank in google.co.uk and not any other major search engines as he cannot ship outside of the UK.
So as an SEO company (and even SEO individuals should have this too) I have a list of some great directories that are great for business listings, most are free 1 or 2 are paid but it gives a wide range of options to post to. Now it is not worth me posting Jim’s site to any directories outside of the UK as the results will not be relevant or LOCAL. This is personally where I think the initial myth began!
People would post irrelevant local or personal listings in business directories. For example my local blog where I talk about fitness and generally whatever I feel like talking about (It is at: Tom Buckland.com for anyone who is interested.) Anyway, it is not worth me submitting that site to a business directory under health and fitness or gyms, as it is not relevant and I do not have a physical local address and if someone was looking for a fitness business or gym in their area and did see my blog, although the information might help them, its not exactly what they were looking for!
Im not going to give my directories list here but if you search around and edit your own list you can have a great list of around 30-50 directories that will get you a good citation or backlink back to your (or your clients) site. Also don’t get to rapped up in the PR of the directory, you are not getting a PR8 backlink if you submit to a directory, that’s just what the homepage is!
